General description

Potassium nitrate is a water-soluble inorganic salt that is commonly used as nitrogen fertilizer. It is also found in toothpastes as a desensitizer for tooth hypersensitivity. The addition of KNO₃ to growth medium has shown to promote growth in salt stressed melon plants.

Application

Potassium nitrate may be used in the synthesis of 5-bromo-8-nitroisoquinoline via bromination of isoquinoline using N-bromosuccinimide.
